2013 will see the return of the revamped Star Trek franchise into cinemas, with many of the cast from J J Abrams successful rebranding returning to reprise their roles, joined by Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain of the piece.
And yes, this rather desolate new poster image - not dissimilar to the The Dark Knight Rises iconography - appears to show Mr Cumberbatch standing in a Starfleet insignia-shaped hole overlooking the landscape of a burning future London skyline (you can make out the 'Gherkin' building on the lower right. Early rumours suggested Cumberbatch might be playing Khan (originally essayed by Ricardo Montalban), but further info leans towards a re-telling of the classic Trek story where Kirk's colleague Gary Mitchell acquired almost god-like powers after a cosmic encounter.
The official synopsis reads thus:
“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
We'll know more soon. The first full trailer will debut later this month and the film opens May 17th 2013...
