Back on 'Point' for extreme remake?

Written by (Editor) on 12th November 2013

Point Break became a cult classic and launched many careers. Now a remake, with even more extreme sports on show, is getting ready to shoot the waves...

Another notable deal from the recent AFM was the news that there are plans of a remake/re-imagining of Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break. The 1991 film helped launch the careers of its director and Keanu Reeves, the late Patrick Swayze as well as seeing able support from the likes of Gary Busey and Lori Petty. The story dealt with a group of LA surfers who were also responsible for series of bank heists in which the gang dressed as 'Dead Presidents'. Reeves played the undercover cop sent to infiltrate the group and prove their guilt.

The remake is based around a similar idea,  retaining the key characters of cop Johnny Utah and the gang's leader Bodhi, but in this case the team of thieves will have a broader remit - they will be a team of extreme sportsmen, undertaking a raft of different, dangerous disciplines including wingsuiting, snowboarding and rock-climbing. Lionsgate and Alcon Entertainment have teamed up for the project and the budget for the film is believed to be around $100m with filming due to start in March next year. It will be directed by newcomer Ericson Core who was tthe cinematographer on the first Fast & Furious film, but  whose only actual directing duties were on Invincible, the american football movie starring Mark Wahlberg that was released in 2006. The script has been written by Kurt Wimmer (Total Recall).

The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the film is set for an Easter 2015 release - contributing to a line-up that's already looking to be the toughest line-up in recent memory...
