Jupiter...Descending? Pulled until 2015

Written by (Editor) on 4th June 2014

'Jupiter Ascending' was something of a wildcard for the 2014 summer schedule, out in just a few weeks' time. However it's been suddenly pulled until 2015...

There are very few specific details at this point, but the Wachowski siblings' Jupiter Ascending has been pulled from the schedules and will now not debut in cinemas this year. The new plan is to not realease the big sci-fi outing until February 6th 2015, according to industry site Deadline.

The film has been trailered for some time - the final trailer is currently (or has been until now) playing prominently in UK and US cinemas - and was due to be released in US cinemas on 18th July (and UK screens a week later).  Though schdules change, it is highly unusual to pull a film so close to its announced release and it is suspected that the production wanted more time to complete the expansive special effects. However, if true, this would mean that the film wasn't anywhere near ready a month before release, despite the heavy promotion. It could also mean that  Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow  or the Wachowskis themselves, are concerned enough to be wanting to make changes to the edit of the film. The siblings, who were responsible for the Matrix trilogy and more recently the expansive and visually-stylish (but critically-divisive)  Cloud Atlas  are known for their big ideas and big canvases and Jupiter Ascending certainly fit the bill.

The film tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) who might be a lowly maid in the not-too-distant future, but has no idea she is also owner of the title 'Queen of the Universe' and has been targetted for cosmic assassination. Can two aliens Caine (Channing Tatum) and Stinger (Sean Bean) turn the tide... delivering her not to her enemies but her destined throne?

Visually, the film looks as stunning as ever (though Tatum's 'look' certainly raised a few eyebrows!) but it isn't clear if the story is written in the broad-strokes that others have complained of in the past. However it looks as if we'll have to wait over seven months and to the much less 'tent-pole' arena of a usually quiet February to see if Sean Bean makes it to the second act this time...
