After recent off-screen trials and tribulations, Tom Cruise will be back in sci-fi blockbuster territory when he starts shooting his new film in the next week... and with a date for All You Need Is Kill: March 14, 2014.
Thematically, the film (directed by Doug Liman) is a mix of Independence Day and Groundhog Day - set against the invasion of earth by aliens called 'Mimics'. Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage who has never seen active duty on the battlefield and is suddenly demoted and dropped onto the frontline. He doesn't last very long, being killed in an encounter with the mysterious aliens. However he finds himself suddenly alive again and living the same day over and over. Can he use this time-loop to learn more and more about the invading menace and a real way to defeat them, depsite all the obstacles. He teams-up with a Special Forces operative, Rita Vrataski (Looper's Emily Blunt) for the final, definitive task to save Earth. Bill paxton is also rumoured to be in the cast.
The movie is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's book and will be the first production to lens at the newly-renamed Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden near London.
