SDCC: ‘Stargate’ gets prequel series and hub…

Stargate‘ has been a fan-favourite in its many forms for several decades. Now MGM intend to kickstart a major initiative with a new online series…

One of the first major bits of news to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic Con is that MGM are prepping another element to the Stargate franchise.

The original saga began with the famous Roland Emmerich /Dean Devlin film in 1994 starring Kurt Russell and James Spader in what was often discussed as the opening salvo of a trilogy. Though moderately successful, the two sequels never appeared (though there’s renewed interest in recent years) and, quite separately MGM spun-off a series Stargate SG1 in 1997 – featuring some of the same characters, expanding the network of stargates and creating new threats – which became a massive cult hit, running for over a decade.

Several tv movies with the same cast followed and another series Stargate Universe flung a new set of characters to the far side of the cosmos with a stargate onboard and a remit to find their way home… it lasted two seasons.

Now MGM have announced they will be launching a major new internet/multimedia hub, stargatecommand.co and creating a new series, Stargate:Origins which is planned to be ten episodes, each section running to approximately ten minutes. The plan is to set a majority of the story in 1920 and have it feature the character of Catherine Langford. An elderly version of the character was featured in the original film and the character appeared briefly in episodes of the main tv show.

“We’ve been eager to revisit the ‘Stargate’ franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, president of digital and new platforms at MGM in a statement. “We view ‘Stargate Origins’ as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with ‘Stargate Origins.’”

This does raise some interesting questions as the character of Catherine never ventured through a stargate in the original timeline but was simply the daughter of an archaeologist who discovered the relics in Egypt and suspected there was some greater secret to the relics he uncovered… with it being decades later before its powerful secret was revealed.

The full site and series will launch later this year – the site already has an active link…
