Does ‘Alien Covenant’ trailer scream ‘great’ or ‘remake’?

Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant‘ is nearly ready to spawn… but just how many more face-hugging easter-eggs to the original will the latest chapter include..?

In space no-one can hear you scream. While there’s no denying that the newly-released for the May release of Alien: Covenant hits some strong dramatic beats and appears to have a good lix of cinematography and xenomorphic special visual effects, it might also be claimed that half the audience are quietly wondering if, in space, anyone can hear you scream ‘This all seems a bit familiar!

That may be the biggest challenge of the latest Alien film – the fact that while other chapters have veered spectacularly off-course, the idea of going back to the explicit beats and strengths of the original classic horror film may risk bringing unfavourable comparisons. Those of us at Impact Towers like the look of this film and we’ll be there on opening night, but we also can’t deny that many of the key moments in this trailer simply evoke the memories of the 1979 outing (as did the release of a prologue scene last week) and if the film is going to be great rather than good, it will need to have a few surprises up its scaley sleeve rather than merely playing homage to its source material.

The film stars , Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England and Benjamin Rigby and opens 19th May.

Fingers and claws crossed.
