Though no deal has been signed as yet, the Hollywood Reporter says that Marvel Studios are close to signing James Gunn as the director for their Guardians of the Galaxy film. This is, so far, the only official part of Marvel's 'Phase Two' that isn't a sequel to one of their raft of movies that preceded the Avengers and the one with the biggest question-mark given the lack of mainstream awareness about the cosmic team of adventurers..
James Gunn previously directed the likes of Slither (with Nathan Fillion) and Super (starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page) and is said that Marvel like the mix of action and humour that he could bring to the project. The latest information of the film's plot describes the film as being about: "...a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants." (which sounds a lot like Farscape to us, but it's not a unique concept) and is likely to find the diverse cosmic team going up against the might of galactic villain Thanos - as glimpsed in the Avengers.
An early script was written by Nicole Perman and Chris McCoy was drafted on earlier this year to produce a second script. The film is currently scheduled to be released on August 14th 2014...
