Captain America's 'Winter' to get 'Sundance'd'?

Written by (Editor) on 22nd March 2013

If rumours are right, one of Hollywood's all-time greats may make an apperance in the sequel for another American icon...

A few decades ago, the actor might well have been the front-runner for the main hero's role, but now industry site Deadline is reporting that there are apparently plans for screen legend Robert Redford to appear in the upcoming Marvel Studios' superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Little is known about the specifics of the role, though the site indicates that the star (whose numerous credits include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Three Days of the Condor, The Sting, Sneakers and Out of Africa) could be seen in a senior 'SHIELD' position, the elite task-force in which Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) has a command position. This could mean that it would be just a subtle cameo - a la the shadowy appearances of Jenny Agutter and Powers Booth in the Avengers film.

Though not much is known about the plot-line of the sequel,  we do know that a majority of it takes place in the present, with possible flashbacks to WWII - the reverse of the first film's set-up. The title suggests that the plot is, in part, sponsored by the 'Winter Soldier' storyline in the original comics that revealed that Cap's WWII sidekick Bucky Barnes wasn't killed in action but kept alive in suspended animation and brainwashed as an enemy agent with the codename 'Winter Soldier'. It's also believed that the sequel will have a more thriller/political slant than the all-out action adventure of the first film.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is due in US cinemas around April 4th 2014.
