Tom Cruise might be getting iffy reviews for ‘The Mummy‘ but his next outing, ‘American Made‘, goes for a different audience…
Over the years Tom Cruise has had his fair share of brickbats and bouquets but as an actor he’s rarely been one to not seize control of his career and remain unpredictable. yes, there’s the pearly-smiled hero factor at play in almost every release and he’s savvy when it comes to placing himself at the centre of franchise films like the Mission Impossible series and as the hero of current releases like The Mummy.
But every so often he’ll throw a zig into the zagging and give us a mature Magnolia, a villainous Collateral, a creepy Vanilla Sky or an erotic/sleazy Eyes Wide Shut. American Made stands astride his mainstream and left-field choices. There’s the innate Cruise charm at play throughout the just-released trailer but the tone in anti-hero and more adult ,certainly of the not-guaranteed-blockbuster variety that suggests Cruise liked the script and idea rather than payday potential.
It helps that Cruise has worked with director Doug Liman before (Edge of Tomorrow and its proposed sequel) and it’s clear the guys collaborate well.
Here’s the trailer for American Made... full of sex and drugs and rock’n’rolling airplanes…
