It’s a change in tone, but could the ‘final Wolverine film, now known as ‘Logan‘ have saved the very unforgiving best for last. The new trailer promises as much…
It’s been a week for significant teaser trailers and the latest doesn’t let the quality slip. Logan, due in March 2017, may yet be Hugh Jackman’s swansong in the role of the adamantium-laced mutant but if so, he may well be going out on a high. Directed by James Mangold, it seems to eschew the bombastic style of the X-Men movies (such as the hugely disappointing Apocalypse) and instead goes for a gritty, dusty and very different ‘apocalyptic’ tone that brings to mind the likes of Unforgiven.
The trailer, launched today, seems to suggest the rumours that the story is at least inspired by the tone, if not the full events, of the Old Man Logan comic series which saw a future version of Wolverine/Logan who had sworn off violence after a massive tragedy involving his team-mates… but forced to unsheath those claws once again when his family his killed. In the film version, it’s clear Logan’s life has gone to hell and that Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is not in good shape either. They must combine their resources when a young girl is targeted – but she may have secrets of her own, linked to Logan’s past and future.
The film also stars Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce, Richard E. Grant as Doctor Rice and an almost unrecognisable Stephen Merchant as Caliban.
We love the look of this trailer – complete with what appears to be a ‘R/18’ certificate content (Wolverine finally allowed to fulfill his claw-popping potential) and a wholly appropriate soundtrack of Johnny Cash‘s version of Nine-Inch-Nails‘ ‘Hurt‘ – and hope the final film delivers on its promise…
